History of the Bushkill Volunteer Fire Company.
In the early 1930's, a bucket brigade was created by a group of farmers and home owners. The members of the bucket brigade decided to form a fire company and was incorporated on February 11, 1936. During 1936, they also purchased their first fire truck. This was a Dodge pumper purchased for $3,600 from Russell Scheller Chrysler Dodge in Bushkill. It was housed at that garage until 1941.
A gas station on Route 209 was used as the first base station. The station has since been demolished by the Tock's Dam Project. In 1940, the members converted an old church on Bushkill Falls Road into their first firehouse. This building is now occupied by the National Park Service.
A fire tax was created in 1957 by the Lehman Township supervisors. This new fire tax gave the company funds to purchase equipment and take care of building expenses.
In 1979, the National Park Service purchased the original firehouse on Bushkill Falls Rd for $66,000, but the fire company continued to use the building until the new station (on Evergreen Drive in Rustic Acres) was built. Carl Rohner, the developer of Rustic Acres, donated the land to the fire company. The building was completed at the cost of $500,000.
We now have 3 stations and 11 pieces of apparatus in our fleet, covering parts of both Monroe and Pike Counties. We are dispatched by Monroe County as Station 24 on 453.750 Mhz. We are in the process of obtaining station #4 for the purpose of housing the dive/recovery truck (currently housed at the main station) and the boats (currently housed at the sub-stations).
