The Bushkill Volunteer Fire Company has a Junior squad which currently consists of eight young men and women ranging from 14 to 17 years of age. They have been trained to the fullest extent possible (due to some age restrictions) to prepare them for the duties of a senior member once they turn 18.
Although they can not enter a burning building, the junior members are able to ride the apparatus and assist with safe, yet necessary tasks on the fireground along with participating in company classes and drills. To ensure the constant safety of the junior firefighter, they are issued a full set of protective turn-out gear and Junior advisors are assigned to oversee the safety and training of these young members.
Some of the current line officers (and possibly some future officers) started out as members of the Junior squad. Being a Junior firefighter is not only something for the member to be proud of, but also the parents and family of the Junior member as well. A Junior firefighter learns not only firefighting essentials, but also teamwork and responsibility. It also gives the member a sense of pride as being a member of the fire company.
I am proud to say I am a Junior firefighter and enjoy it very much. Joining the Junior squad is one of the most serious and important decisions I have made so far. I am looking forward to becoming a senior member once I turn 18 years old.
